Lake Toxaway Real Estate: Lake Toxaway?s magical, natural beauty has long attracted vacationers, property seekers and even entrepreneurs. At the beginning of the 20th century, the area was nothing more than an unsophisticated wilderness with a lot of potential. An entrepreneur by the name of E.H. Jennings was the first to tap into that potential; Jennings spearheaded the development of the lake itself plus several resorts. Just developing the three-mile lake was a monumental endeavor, but Jennings? efforts were rewarded when the Toxaway Inn quickly became a premier destination. For more than a decade, the Toxaway Inn catered to wealthy, sometimes famous, clientele.
In 1916, heavy rains caused the dam to break and Lake Toxaway drained overnight. The Inn remained intact, but lost business when it no longer boasted a waterfront location. By 1920, Toxaway Inn was closed.
Roughly 40 years later, the lake was brought to life once again. A group of developers refilled Lake Toxaway and opened a new high-end resort, the Greystone Inn. Since then, the community has filled out with dazzling homes and gorgeous golf resorts. Home buyers, both residents and investors, have warmed to the community?s scenery, recreational opportunities and relaxed lifestyle.
Lake Toxaway is tucked between four mountains?Hawk Mountain, Cold Mountain, Mount Toxaway and Panthertail Mountain?such that there are many opportunities to explore the natural North Carolina landscapes. These mountains, along with some impressive local waterfalls, are favorites among hikers, campers and nature enthusiasts. Toxaway Falls, Little Deep Ford Falls and Raven Rock Falls are sites not to miss.
Golf is also popular with locals. The Lake Toxaway Country Club features an 18-hole, par 71 golf course, as well as facilities for tennis, swimming and dining facilities. Other area courses are The Wade Hampton Golf Course, Sapphire Mountain Golf Club, Highlands Cove and High Hampton Inn and Country Club.
